Illinois Plinkit Conference Report

LSTA Grant Update: Do you know about Plinkit

On May 1st the first Plinkit Conference was held at the Lincoln Library in Springfield. Over forty librarians attended this event. The participants were from libraries that have used Plinkit for their website development for over a year; some who have just started, and others who just wanted to know, “What is Plinkit?”

The attendees were welcomed to the conference by Tom Peters and received greetings from Anne Craig. Presentations on the following topics were given:
- The Future of Plinkit
- The Technology of Plinkit
- Plinkit as Web 2.0
- Getting Started and Training with Plinkit
A panel discussion and breakout sessions completed the day-long event. Comments from participants about Plinkit were-
“Plinkit is Stupid Proof."
"Plinkit looks great, less intimidating."
“Plinkit for Dummies does not have to be written, it is that easy.”

What is Plinkit? Plinkit stands for Public Library Interface Kit and it is a way for small libraries, not just public ones, to have a great-looking easy–to-update website. Rolling Prairie Library System is the lead system in this grant in collaboration with the Shawnee Library System, Alliance Library System, Lewis & Clark Library System, Lincoln Trail Libraries System, DuPage Library System and Metropolitan Library System.
Who can become a Plinkit library? Any library that wishes to have a website that is easy to update and will commit 1-2 hours per week to maintain it.

How long has Plinkit been around? This is the second year for this LSTA grant project. Illinois is part of a four-state collaborative with Oregon, Colorado, and Texas who are working together to develop the Plinkit template. The template is built on Plone an open source software.
